Places To Drive - Ixtapa ZihuatanejoIn an unusually beautiful site, in the heart of the Mexican Pacific, surrounded by mountains covered with tropical forest that come down to the coast, lies the peaceful, picturesque fishing village of Zihuatanejo with its wonderful combination of tranquility, exuberant surroundings and affordable tourist facilities. Its superb semi-tropical climate, with temperatures oscillating between 23 and 33°C and its nearly three kilometers of beach have made this one of Mexico's most popular resorts. Although its main attraction is the golden beaches that surround its gorgeous bay, wandering round the cobbled streets in the town center is also extremely pleasant. There you will find restaurants serving national and international cuisine, picturesque shops and typical markets carrying everything from traditional handicrafts to the latest international fashions. Also worth visiting in the archaeological museum where you will be able to find out about some of the history of the region. For those in search of nightlife, Zihuatanejo offers night clubs and small, intimate bars with live music. Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo has managed to preserve all the attractions that have made it so highly sought after; virtually unspoiled beaches, year-round sun, a calm, clean sea, exuberant vegetation and exotic birds. It also has a first-rate infrastructure, hotels and restaurants to suit every budget, golf course and above all, facilities for water sports, excursions and walks. Beaches - Zihuatanejo's main attraction is its stunning beaches with miles of golden sands dotted with cliffs and headlands sculpted by nature. Since they are spread around a bay, the beaches are calm and safe for water sports. Some of Zihuatanejo's most famous beaches include Playa Municipal, La Ropa, Las Gatas and La Madera.
La Soleda de Maciel (also known as La Chole) is an archaeological site still in the raw stages (no government restorations yet). About 30 min. from Ixtapa - Zihuatanejo. It is very highly recommended not to make this tour on your own; purchase it through a Tour Operator and be escorted by an Official Guide. There is also an Ecological Tour to San Valentín in nearby Petatlan. About one hour from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. A 100% virgin area. You'll be able to see wild ducks, albatrosses and herons in their natural habitat of their beautiful lagoon, doves and a wide variety of birds, a Federal Government Camp for the Preservation of the Sea Turtle, a very exuberant flora and a beach that seems to have no end. If ecology and relaxation is in your mind... this tour is very worth while. Interesting Places - Zihuatanejo is a provincial, picturesque port with nice streets where you can take pleasant walks under the shade of the tropical trees. The best time to do this is in the mornings and afternoons. The buildings are not very tall when compared with the modern tourist complex at Ixtapa, where the high-rise hotels meld harmoniously into the beach scenery. Low beach constructions in Zihuatanejo combine with the comfortable buildings of the Ixtapa mega-project created for tourists. Museums & Theatres - In Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo's main museum you can learn about the history of the city's founders and the cultural evolution of the rest of the region. Museo Arqueologico de la Costa Grande - Located in Zihuatanejo, on Paseo del Pescador, in front of Playa Municipal. This museum has an interesting collection of objects found at the 54 archaeological zones in Zihuatanejo's surrounding areas and in Costa Grande. The pieces on display have Olmec, Teotihuacan, Tarasca and Mexica influences. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 to 6:00. |
